THE LIGHTHOUSE PROJECT GLASGOW

The Lighthouse is Scotland's first dedicated national centre for architecture and design. The Lighthouse is the renamed £13 million conversion of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's 1895 Glasgow Herald newspaper office. The centre's vision is to develop the links between art, design and architecture, seeing these as interconnected, social, educational, economic and cultural issues of concern to everyone. Since opening the centre has welcomed over 700,000 visitors.

Warmafloor's Wire Grid underfloor heating system was installed in all six floors, heating over 3000m2 of the building. The areas included entrance foyers, workshops, computer laboratories, gallery space, the mini 'Wee People's City' as well as a conference centre, shops and two cafe/restaurants.

Heating is obviously an important aspect to maintaining thermal comfort within any given space. As this is a public building, it was essential that a comfortable atmosphere was created for those visiting the building. The main objective was to design a heating strategy within comfort limits that will minimise energy use, with as little impact on the environment as possible, thus warmafloor were the perfect choice and were appointed as the designer / installer for the underfloor heating.

A large amount of the building incorporates gallery and exhibition space. Underfloor heating is an ideal form of heating for this type of area. The concealed installation provides increased display space, which in turn reduces risk of vandalism and due to the large ceiling heights, the underfloor heating is more efficient as the heat is radiant meaning it only heats the occupied space.

The heating system installed in this project is one of the several design options Warmafloor can provide, each design is specifically tailored to the building's requirements, ensuring a complete service from concept to commissioning.
