The
National Maritime Museum at Greenwich was officially opened recently after
a £20 million reconstruction. The museum houses the largest maritime
exhibition in the world, tracing the history of all things nautical from
the first vessel to travel over 100 mph on water to the massive drill
head used to excavate the seabed for Hong Kong's new airport.
This impressive building, the largest Maritime Museum in the world, features a 2300m² central enclosed courtyard on two levels covered by a single curved lightweight roof supported from adjacent buildings, leaving the exhibition space column free. A major challenge was how to provide the necessary heating and cooling required for the 30,000 cubic meters of air-conditioned space. Leading British underfloor heating manufacturer Warmafloor, in conjunction with building services consultants B.D.P, solved the problem by designing and installing an underfloor heating and cooling system that is embedded in the floor construction. The Warmafloor system is zoned to suit the different areas and conditions of the museum, and can operate either in the heating or cooling mode dependent on what is required. The underfloor system being linked to boiler and chilling plants. The performance of the Warmafloor underfloor heating /cooling system has been so impressive that it is now being monitored by the BRE (Building Research Establishment) for possible inclusion as a Best Practice example in the national energy efficiency programme. Warmafloor is at the forefront of Underfloor Heating and Cooling Technology.
