Situated on the outskirts of Norwich, Sportspark is a 20,000 square foot indoor arena surrounded by 270 acres of parkland and woodland. The parkland contains pitches, courts and an athletic track. Indoors, the centre has facilities for more than 43 sports along with seating for spectators, a café bar and meeting rooms.
The Sports Hall complies fully with international tennis, badminton and cricket requirements. As well as basketball courts, a fitness centre, martial arts and dance studios, and a tailor made climbing wall for abseiling and bouldering, the facility houses a 50 metre Olympic pool.
Drake & Scull designed and installed the Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health Services which included a number of specialist fittings such as underwater lights, cameras and speakers in the pool. There are four different levels of lighting in the sports hall, and all heating and lighting is controlled via a touch screen computer in the reception area.
The complex is full of innovative design features such as the moveable dividing walls in the squash courts, which can create space for doubles, other sports or displays. In the main hall, electrically operated seating for 750 people can be extended and retracted to meet different requirements. The pool contains the world's largest movable floor, which can reduce the standard 1.8 metre depth as required.
The pool surround, seating areas and changing rooms feature a Warmafloor underfloor heating system using the Warmafloor clip rail method. The system was designed with Drake & Scull Engineers and installed into the floor on insulated panels and integrated with the various floor drainage channels and removable fixtures.
Underfloor heating has proved ideal for this usage providing warmth underfoot and quick drying surfaces that reduce the possibility of bacteria growth or transmission that can occur on damp surfaces.
