GENESIS PROJECT, SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
WARAMFLOOR MAKE THE MOST OF SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION.
Somerset College of Arts and Technology in Taunton is one of the government's centres of vocational excellence, and the only one in the country which has received the award with "sustainability" in its title. The main feature of our commitment to sustainable construction is the £2.5 million Genesis Centre currently under development.
Patron for this project Kevin McCloud of Channel 4 Grand Designs says "It's a wonderful exemplary educational project, not just for Somerset, not just for this region, but for the whole country".
Underfloor heating was considered to be the natural choice for this construction area, providing a significantly more cost effective and eco friendly solution than the more traditional heating systems.

The underfloor installation uses Warmafloor's top of the range batten pipe clipping arrangement, comprising an insulated recycled paper insulation sub level with a wooded covering. A battened floor laid over the top in which the underfloor heating pipework sits within this void. This area uses Warmafloor's Polybutylene underfloor pipework, which carries a 50 year warranty. Output from the floor is 80watts/sq. mtr
The building is designed around a central forum space with Warmafloor's underfloor heating system installed throughout the development, including a series of differently constructed intersecting pavilions. The externally protruding portion of each of the pavilions is fully finished and weather tight, whilst the internally protruding sections that are inside the main forum space have their fabric stripped away to reveal and demonstrate the construction.
The concept behind the Genesis Centre is to demonstrate many different techniques and materials for sustainable construction. The design is flexible and has the ability to stay leading-edge by demolishing pavilions when they have served their purpose and replacing them with new designs and materials.
Building work on the Genesis Centre is well underway, during construction our fitters could be seen installing our underfloor system on the live web cam.
