Underfloor heating is usually specified for its ability to keep wall spaces free of obstruction and save energy, but for the young students at one recently completed school it's the comfort offered during 'floor based activities' that is the real attraction.
Embley Park Junior School in Romsey caters for youngsters aged three to eleven and the youngest of the students spend a proportion of their time grouped around their teacher sitting on the floor to listen to stories, or working on play-based learning projects. The warm floor has proved just the thing to help encourage young minds to settle down to the task at hand.
The underfloor heating system designed and installed by Warmafloor is the latest installed in over 1000 schools completed by the company over the past few years.
The system meets the school's principal specification requirement by creating a comfortable environment without the need for hot wall-mounted radiators, which would be a potential hazard to the younger pupils.
It also provides highly controllable, economical heating. The grids in the floor are laid using Warmafloor's high performance Polybutylene underfloor heating pipe and is arranged in zones so that each room has its own thermostat and can be separately controlled. The installation, which covers the majority of the ground and first floor areas, is now being extended to include an additional phase of construction.
Embley Park Junior, an independent junior school for up to 200 children aged 3-11, is the Junior Department of Embley Park School, a 3-18 coeducational day and boarding school. It caters for a wide range of abilities and has specialisms in ICT and music. It is located adjacent to the senior school and within an estate, which was once home to the young Florence Nightingale.
