Adams House

Residential Care Homes, best new development in Special Care/Health Care Design Awards 2000.

Adams House is a sheltered housing project, providing 38 two-person flats in which visually impaired adults can be supported to live with independence. The entire scheme is also flexibly designed to be wheelchair-accessible to allow for any deterioration in residents' mobility.

As a result, the complex offers well-conceived and innovative features to assist the visually impaired. Did you know, for example, that yellow was used for key areas because it is the last colour to go when a person loses their sight?

Even the property's unusual façade is designed, not purely for aesthetic reasons, but to help guide residents to the main entrance.

Specialist features are incorporated such as talking fire alarms, doors and light controls, whilst an underfloor heating system provides a safe and practical alternative to radiators. The latter, together with a modern heat recovery system, maximises daylight and excellent insulation, also has the added benefits of reducing costs.

Warmafloor's underfloor heating is installed throughout the development, each flat having its own independent system controlled by a room thermostat. The flats are served by a central boiler plant serving the individual units.

The next project is the creation of a sensory garden which is hoped will further enhance the enjoyment of residents.
