Warmafloor, specialists in underfloor heating and cooling, have completed an pioneering installation in Rhondda hospital, in what is probably the first hospital to use sustainable resources in the UK.
The new facility provides primary, secondary and social care to the population of the Rhondda Valleys in a modern and flexible environment. Services to be provided will include:
• 108 Rehabilitation beds
• Outpatients Department
• Minor Casualty Facility
• Radio-diagnostics, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Chiropody, Audiology and Occupational Health
• Support Services together with a Primary Care Resource Centre and GP Out-of-Hours service.
Rhondda Cynon Taff Council had been campaigning for over 20 years for a new Rhondda hospital, and had already been refused on the grounds that the trust did not have a definite plan.
Warmafloor had a presence right from the start, offering a design input. We were able to supply a full design, supply and installation service, using only our own fully trained heating and cooling specialists.
Working closely with Mitie Engineering - the main services contractor - enabled a hands on approach, guiding them all the way, which created a bespoke heating and cooling system to meet the ever changing demands of an operational hospital. This is where Warmafloor really was the only specialist contractor to use, providing a complete heating & cooling solution, from a “one stop shop”. Jane Hutt (Assembly Minister for Health and Social Services) said "I fully expect Pontypridd & Rhondda NHS Trust to progress the scheme as quickly as practicable." This is why we offered an onsite approach with operatives being constantly aware of other services following directly behind, which allowed a uninterrupted flow of works, speeding up the entire supply services installation. The floor construction consists of Warmafloor’s 50mm Tacker insulation laid over a concrete slab floor, Coils of 5 layer polybutylene pipework were fixed to the insulation, covering an area of 11,500 Sq.m., a liquid screed was applied to the whole floor area, encasing the pipework. The whole underfloor heating and cooling system was completed by a team of two Warmafloor specialist installers; an almost unbelievable task with such tight deadlines.
