Gloucestershire's new £19 million police headquarters is unusual. Further investigation reveals that this is one of the first Private finance initiative (PFI) projects that has utilised the growing trend of combining ground source heat pumps and Warmafloor's underfloor heating and cooling systems to condition the building
Whilst in the heating mode, during the winter months the heat pump delivers a 50 deg C/ 40 deg C flow and return temperature to Warmafloor's heating circuits. During the increasingly long and hotter summer months, the heat pump can achieve a flow and return temperature of 7/12 deg C. Through clever design and control this is slightly elevated and introduced to the same underfloor heating circuits to provide a very effective cooling system.
By combining Warmafloor's underfloor heating and cooling system with Geothermal ground source heat pumps suggests that this is the most cost effective and environmentally friendly solution available in the UK today.
McBain Cooper, consultants for the project anticipate a 30 -40% energy saving using underfloor heating and cooling when compared to a more conventional air conditioning system.
Clearly another major advantage of using underfloor heating and cooling is that it liberates all the available space because there is no in-room equipment that will encroach into the space, giving a cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing building.
The combination of heat pumps and underfloor heating and cooling has been a major factor in achieving BREAM "Excellent" rating.
Environmental considerations have been at the forefront of this project. Warmafloor's systems not only offer the most environmentally friendly solution available in the UK but, when combined with other technologies serve to enhance their qualities.
